What You Really Need to Know When Choosing a Wedding Photographer | 4 Tips

Yippee!! You have the ring! Your wedding planning can finally begin! You quick hop on the internet and type in “Wedding Photographer near me.” What you weren’t prepared for was the flood of photographers that would pop up on your screen. Candid, Portrait, Photojournalism, Lifestyle, Artistic. It’s enough to make your head spin.

If you are anything like me you probably have one hundred and twelve tabs open comparing them all to each other. I’m going to help you narrow that down a bit so that you can choose the best one for YOU. Here are the 4 things you really need to know when selecting your wedding photographer.  (And, how cool is it that they all start with “P!?” I didn’t even plan that at first!!)

You thought that I was going to tell you that taking a good picture is the most important. Well, your probably right, but we’ll get to that in a minute.  Personality is super important because this is going to be the person with you ALL THE TIME on one of the most important days of your life! They will be with you more than your groom, your mother, even your MOH. It is important that you and your photographer get along and have the same vision for your day.

Do you like the pictures that the photographer takes? But more importantly…their STYLE! Do they have mostly black and white photos or color photos? Do they take a lot of posed pictures or more candid ones? Does the coloring of their pictures align with what you envision your wedding photos to look like? When you see their photos, does it make you FEEL something? Or is it just a pretty picture?

I’m going to let you in on a little secret…you can ask to see an ENTIRE client gallery! It will be helpful to see if you can picture yourself loving the WHOLE experience with this photographer.

Does the photographer appear to be a professional? For example, do they have a well written contract? Do they reply to you in a timely manner? Do you have confidence that they will be able to manage themselves on your wedding day? These are important things to keep in mind and will give you a little insight into how experienced they are and how they handle themselves.

Wedding photography can be a huge investment! On average, couples spend about 8-10% of their wedding budget on photography. While I would love to say to choose the best photographer no matter the cost, that is not always realistic. We all have budgets to stick to, so be sure that you photographer fits within your budget.

Bonus tip: Trust YOUR gut. If you found a photographer that takes amazing pictures, but when you meet them in person something just doesn’t feel right, don’t book them! Your intuition knows best. Happy planning!!
